Catherine Landis admits in a recent and very lengthy Salon.com article to being a far-Left activist in eastern Tennessee. She describes how she once lost control in confronting someone who was pro-life, screaming at the woman. She also invokes all the usual stereotypes to insult those who are Christians, support prayer in school, oppose gun control or drive large vehicles. We are, of course, racist, sexist, homophobic, ignorant…. and, well, you get the picture.
In suffering through Landis’ long-winded article I began to ask myself which was in a worse position: a Left-winger in the South or a normal Southerner in the USA?
It seems clear to me that the difference is that the liberal minority in the South has the US government to force his values upon a society which doesn’t approve of those values. But the Southern minority in the USA has no such power to force its values upon the non-Southern liberal majority. The liberal minority in the South has abortion, gun control, interracial and homosexual marriage, affirmative action and open borders. But the Southern minority in the USA has what? Any small gain it makes can and will be over-ruled in the US court system. While the liberal minority in the South enjoys a projection of power over hostile territory, the Southern minority in the USA doesn’t even enjoy home rule.
So, the next time I hear a liberal whining about how badly they have it in the South I think I will remind them how badly the South has it in the USA.
